Most of a light installer's work happens on a ladder, a roofline, or a lift. That is also where most injuries happen. Good height habits protect your crew first, and a clean safety record also helps keep your insurance affordable over time.
Ladder basics that prevent most falls
- Set the base one foot out for every four feet of height, and keep it on firm, level ground.
- Keep three points of contact when you climb, and never stand on the top two rungs.
- Do not reach past your comfortable arm span. Move the ladder instead of leaning.
- Check for power lines before you raise a ladder or a pole. Treat every line as live.
- Inspect ladders before each job and take damaged ones out of service.
Steep roofs and multi-story work
The higher and steeper the work, the more the risk. On multi-story homes and commercial buildings, consider proper fall protection, a spotter, or a lift instead of a tall ladder. When you request a quote, we ask the maximum height you work from because it is one of the biggest factors a carrier looks at.
Weather and winter footing
Holiday season means cold, wet, and sometimes icy conditions. Wet leaves on a walkway and frost on a roof are easy to underestimate. Slow down, wear the right footwear, and reschedule roof work when surfaces are slick.
Where insurance fits in
Even careful crews have accidents. General liabilityresponds to third-party injuries and property damage, and workers' compensation helps when an employee is hurt on the job. Safe habits lower how often you need coverage. Coverage is there for the day something still goes wrong.
