Certificate of insurance for light installers
HOAs, property managers, and general contractors almost always ask for a certificate of insurance before you start. Here is what it is and how to get one.
How a Certificate of Insurance Works
Bidding an HOA, a commercial building, or a property manager’s job? Here’s how you go from “I need insurance” to the certificate holder having proof of your coverage, often the same day.
You Apply
You answer a few quick questions about your light-install work and the coverage you want.
Coverage Is Bound
A general liability policy is issued in your business name, often within minutes.
COI Is Generated
You give the certificate holder's full name and address, and a certificate of insurance is created showing your coverage, limits, and dates.
Certificate Holder Gets Proof
The COI is delivered to the HOA, property manager, or general contractor, and you're cleared to start hanging lights.
What is a certificate of insurance?
A certificate of insurance, or COI, is a one-page summary of your policy. It shows that you carry coverage, what type it is, the limits, and the dates it is active. It does not change your policy. It is simply proof, on paper, that your coverage exists.
Why light installers get asked for a COI
When you hang lights on someone else's property, the owner wants to know that a mistake on your part will not become their problem. A cracked roof, a fall, or damage to the building are the kinds of risks they are thinking about. Asking for a COI is how HOAs, property managers, and general contractors confirm you are covered before they let you on the job.
What is a certificate holder?
The certificate holder is the person or company that receives the COI, usually the HOA, property manager, or general contractor hiring you. Some clients also ask to be named as an additional insured, which is a step beyond simply holding the certificate. Ask each client how they want to be listed.
How to get your COI fast
Start a quote, choose your coverage, and once your general liability policy is in place you can get a certificate of insurance, often the same day. Have the certificate holder's full legal name and mailing address ready so it can be listed correctly the first time.
